West Bengal Profession Tax has been revised in 2026, bringing significant relief to salaried employees. The biggest change is the increase in the monthly salary threshold for Profession Tax exemption from ₹10,000 to ₹20,000.
This change is particularly important for HR, Payroll and Compliance professionals, because the revised Profession Tax slabs need to be incorporated into payroll systems and salary calculations.
The revised rates are prescribed through the latest amendment to the West Bengal State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act, 1979.
What Has Changed in West Bengal Profession Tax?
Under the earlier Profession Tax structure, employees earning up to ₹10,000 per month were generally not liable to pay Profession Tax. Employees above this threshold were subject to monthly deductions ranging from ₹110 to ₹200 depending on their salary slab.
The revised structure provides a much higher exemption limit.
