What is Loss of Pay (LOP)?

If you are working in India, you must have seen the word “LOP” or “Leave Without Pay” in your salary slip. Many employees get surprised when they see their salary is less than expected and HR says, “Sir, aapke do din LOP hain.” So, let’s understand in very simple language what exactly Loss of Pay means.

What does LOP mean?

Loss of Pay (LOP) simply means – salary cut for the days when you were absent but didn’t have any paid leave balance.

Example: Suppose you took 5 days leave in a month, but your leave balance was only 3 days. Those extra 2 days will be considered LOP, and salary for those 2 days will be deducted.

So in short, LOP = Unpaid leave days.

Why do companies mark LOP?

  • Arre bhai, company ko bhi toh rule-following chahiye. LOP is not a punishment, it’s just a system. Companies mark LOP for reasons like:
  • You used all your paid leaves (CL, SL, PL).
  • You took leave without approval.
  • You didn’t inform anyone and stayed absent.
  • You asked for long leave beyond company policy.
  • In some offices, frequent late coming is also adjusted as LOP.

How is LOP calculated?

Calculation is very simple.

Monthly Salary ÷ Total Working Days × Number of LOP Days

Example:
Salary = ₹30,000 per month
Working Days = 30
Per day salary = ₹30,000 ÷ 30 = ₹1,000

If you had 2 LOP days → 2 × ₹1,000 = ₹2,000 deduction.
So your take-home becomes ₹28,000.

How does it affect salary and benefits?

Salary reduces – Straightforward.

PF, ESIC, PT – These are recalculated on reduced salary.

Net Pay – You will clearly see “LOP Days” and the deduction in your salary slip.

Even 1–2 days LOP can make a noticeable difference, especially for middle-class employees who plan their EMI and monthly budget.

Employee feelings about LOP

Honestly, no one likes to see LOP in payslip. Imagine waiting for salary at month-end and then realising ₹2,000 or ₹3,000 is less. Feels bad, right? But remember, occasional LOP is normal. Problem starts only when it happens again and again – then even managers notice.

How to avoid LOP

  • Some easy desi-style tips:
  • Apply for leave in advance and get it approved – “Chutti lena hai toh boss ko bolna zaroori hai.”
  • Always check your leave balance.
  • In emergencies, at least inform HR or manager – “Ek chhota WhatsApp message bhi chalega.”
  • Plan long holidays (Diwali, Eid, family functions) smartly with available leave.
